That’s why beginning with October, pictures of a diseased lung, rotting teeth and the effects of throat cancer will appear on cigarette packets. The aim of these pictures on cigarette packets is to warn people especially young people about the dangers of smoking. The Department of Health said that written warnings on packs have been a huge success.
A young smoker said: "Before I was diagnosed with cancer, I felt I was invincible... I never realized you could get cancer so young. The doctors saved my life, but what I've got now is a hard struggle." Thirty-eight-year-old Michael Shepherd from Rickmansworth, Herts, was diagnosed with throat cancer two years ago. He hopes the new warnings will make other smokers realize the risks are real and unlike him stop smoking before it's too late.
Twenty-three countries already have or will shortly bring in similar measures including Australia and New Zealand. Canada was the first country to introduce picture warnings in 2001. Chief Medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson said he welcomes the introduction of picture warnings on tobacco packets as it shows the cruel reality that smoking has on people's health. He said: "Written health warnings have encouraged many smokers to stop smoking. These new stark picture warnings emphasize the harsh health realities of continuing to smoke. I hope they will make many more think hard about giving up, and get the help they need to stop smoking for good."
According to a smoking statistics:
Cancer Research UK said that the Government should go further than the harsh picture warnings.
