More than three quarters of British people supported the idea to remove shops displays of tobacco (73% of respondents) and to issue a law that will prohibit cigarette vending machines completely (77%), according to a recent survey conducted by Cancer Research UK.
This survey shows that public is ready to support the health community in forcing the government to enact legislations that will protect children from constantly developing tobacco marketing.
In 2009 parliament passed a Health Act which established specific time limits to remove cigarette vending machines in 2011 and to place tobacco displays out of view in all shops by the end of 2013. But these steps will not be established unless the government exercises the regulations that already exist.
Government till now hasn’t established these regulations stating that there is lack in public support. The recent survey in which participated more than 1100 people shows the great level of support from British public for protecting children from tobacco commerce.
About 70% of UK respondents supported placing tobacco out of view in all shops and 76 % backed abrogating cigarette vending machines according to a survey conducted in 2009.
Tobacco products have a great influence on health. Smoking is the one of the biggest reasons of cancer all over the world, more than one in five UK cancer deaths are due to smoking. According to statistics only in the United Kingdom from smoking die five times more people than from murder, overdoses, road accidents and HIV.
Smoking is the reason of nine in ten cases of lung cancer. Tobacco smoking also raises the risk of various cancers as for example: cancers of the larynx, mouth, nose, liver, stomach, kidney, it is the cause of different types of leukemia.
Protecting teenagers from tobacco and making the next generation free from smoking are the main aims of the health community. Early around 340,000 people under 16 years old start smoking for the first time. Shop displays play a significant role in attracting young people to try cigarettes.
The chances to try smoking among young people may increase by 35% due to attractive cigarette’s packs that they see at the shop displays.
According to Jean King, Cancer Research UK's director of tobacco control, people are very supportive what concerns putting tobacco products out of view. The legislation is in place and if government adopts it, the lives of many people will be saved. “You get the impression that tobacco companies' profits are more significant that the health and future of our children. In case government ignores this great opportunity, more than half of heavy smokers will die. We ask government to prove its commitment to health” said Jean King.
