Anti-smoking groups that are eager to cut smoking scenes from Hollywood movies have once again bit the dust as they have seen the future imagined by one of the best movie directors ever, and this future involves smoking.
James Cameron who directed “Avatar” admitted that one of the major characters in the movie, brilliantly played by Sigourney Weaver was not designed to be a role model for younger generations, but simply showed that even in the future things won’t change.
Stanton A. Glantz, head of Smoke Free Movies Campaign, said that it was a major back-blow for them to see smoking in such a landmark motion picture like “Avatar”; however, they have no intent to let the things down, and plan to launch an awareness-rising campaign aimed at requiring movie directors avoid depicting pro-smoking messages in the cinema.
When mentioning such messages in “Avatar”, Mr. Glantz was speaking about scenes where Dr. Grace Augustine (played by Sigourney Weaver), a botanist and head of Avatar program showed searching for her cigarettes and then puffing enjoyably as she was trying to save the eco-system of Pandora somewhere in 2154.
Scenesmoking.org, a web-site dealing with smoking scenes in movies, gave ‘Avatar’ (officially rated as a PG-13) a black lung, meaning it contains several unacceptable scenes with positive characters lighting up.
However, 20th Century Fox Science Fiction success, which recently became the highest-grossing film in the history of filmmaking, is not the only recent movie to get the black-lung rating.
“Sherlock Holmes”, “Nine”, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “The Blind Side” and “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” all showing in cinemas across the nation throughout holidays received the “black lung” as they depicted smoking, regardless of the fact that they were rated PG-13 or PG by the Classification and Rating Administration.
Commenting the criticism of anti-smoking groups, James Cameron said that he never perceived Dr. Grace Augustine played by Weaver to become a sort of inspiration for younger generations.
The legendary film-maker said that Ms. Weaver’s character is harsh and is used to smoking and drinking at work. He added that they were trying to make the spectators understand that Dr. Grace Augustine doesn’t pay so much to her human body, than to her avatar body, which is a negative feature of many young people nowadays, who spend much time in the web, forgetting about their real life.
Commenting his attitude to smoking in movies, Mr. Cameron stated that smoking is a nasty habit that he opposes; however, it is a reality. He admitted that the dogmatic concept that there should be no smoking at all in movies is wrong and even ridiculous. People swear, drink alcohol, lie, and even kill in cinema as it is a reflection of our reality. “Avatar” director said that though main characters who can be an inspiration for teenagers should not smoke in movies, it should not be regarded as an absolutely unacceptable thing for other characters to smoke, especially if it symbolizes an important idea.
Besides smoking, head of Smoke Free Movies Campaign said that “Avatar” is an amazing movie.
