With the fight against Measure 50’s proposed cigarette-tax increase already drawing record amounts of money, Philip Morris’s latest $2.5 million contribution puts that campaign over the $9 million mark.
The makers of Marlboros and their parent company have now put in $5.8 million. Their latest contribution was made Oct. 2 and was made public on Friday. Reynolds American, makers of Camel cigarettes, have reported $3.3 million in contributions.
The money is to fight Measure 50, which would raise Oregon’s cigarette tax by 85 cents a pack and use the money to pay for children’s health insurance and other health programs. The Legislature referred the proposal to voters this year and would place it in the Oregon Constitution. The measure is part of the ballot for this year’s Nov. 6 election.
No other campaign for or against a statewide ballot measure in Oregon history has been known to spend more than $6 million.
