It is being reported that smoking cigarettes and drinking a lot of coffee have been found to reduce one's risk of developing Parkinson's disease...
A Duke study finds that people who smoke cigarettes and drink large amounts of coffee are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.
It is being reported that smoking cigarettes and drinking a lot of coffee have been found to reduce one's risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
According to researchers from the United States, Parkinson's patients were less likely to drink or smoke than healthy people, as noted by the fact that other healthy members of their families drank and smoked.
Previous studies have been performed that have hinted to the possibility that caffeine, cigarettes and certain types of anti-inflammatory drugs can reduce a person's risk of Parkinson's disease, but researchers state that there has been limited family studies done to examine these links.
In the study, researchers from the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, looked at 356 Parkinson's patients with the average age of 66, and 317 of their family members averaging 64 years of age.
They found that Parkinson's patients were 44% less likely to have ever smoked a cigarette, and were also less of a coffee drinker than other members of their families.
"Increasing intensity of coffee drinking was inversely associated with Parkinson's disease," they added. "Increasing dosage and intensity of total caffeine consumption were also inversely associated, with high dosage presenting a significant inverse association with Parkinson's disease."
"To our knowledge, our findings represent the first examination of the association between Parkinson's disease and caffeine in a case-family control setting, where cases were well matched to family controls on many unmeasured genetic and environmental factors."
Parkinson's disease affects one out of one hundred US people over the age of sixty.
The study is published in the journal Archives of Neurology.
