Sefton Trading Standards having been working closely with Sefton Primary Care Trust to implement the new legislation.Selling tobacco to anyone under-age can result in a fine of up to ?2,500, and failing to display the statutory notice can result in a fine of up to ?1,000.Sefton Trading Standards manager, Andrew Naisbitt, said: "To help with the change in legislation we have written to all retailers which sell tobacco products informing them of the new law.
"We have also developed an information poster for retailers to display and cards, which can be distributed to any teenage customers so that they are aware of the forthcoming change in age."Our message to retailers is, ’if you are unsure a customer is old enough to buy tobacco products, don’t guess, ask for proof of age’ and that way they will not fall foul of the law."
Cathy Warlow, from Sefton PCT, added: "We hope that the change in the law will help save lives by reminding young people about the fatal consequences of smoking. It is a fact that the younger a smoker starts the more likely they are to be killed by their addiction."SUPPORT is Sefton’s dedicated stop smoking service.
