Maine’s teenagers smoking rate is again on the top after a more than a decade of decrease. This situation is a serious case not only for concern but also for a thorough investigation in order to find out what is hidden behind the increase and what is the most efficient method to lessen it. The state was allocated a $750,000 federal grant on realizations of mentioned above investigations. According to data in 1997 Maine had one of the lower teenager smoking rates in the country. About 39 percent of high school students declared that they were smokers. In 2007 after a variety of serious steps have been taken such as: increases in the state’s cigarette tax, millions of dollars spent on anti-smoking campaign and strict laws against selling tobacco products to minors — the rate has fallen by 14 percent.
After some time it leaped to 18 percent, according to information from the Maine Youth Behavioral Risk Survey.
According to state officials the new generation of teenagers may better accept the higher cigarette prices because they haven’t experienced those times when a pack sold less before taxes were raised. In 2005 Maine increased its tax — from $1 to $2 per pack. Between 2001 and 2007, when the average price of a cigarette pack was sold from $3.53 to $5.28, Maine’s teenager smoking rate has fallen from 25 percent to 14 percent.
Others suppose that the economic hard times and its concomitant stress could expect for more teenager smokers.
It would be very good to know the reasons of smoking rates increase because thus the anti-smoking actions could be more effective. At present Maine spends about $11 million per year in federal and state money on smoking prevention and cessation programs. In contrast to many other states Maine remained attached to earmarking funds for tobacco-related activities.
To reduce smoking among teenagers is very important for health and economic reasons.
According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 85 percent of people who start smoking before the age of 19 become smokers for life.
As stated by the Maine national Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids more than $600 million is spent annually to treat tobacco-related illnesses and about $530 million is spent on productivity.
Food and Drug Administration allocated to Maine a competitive grant in order to increase and strengthen federal tobacco laws. In accordance with the contract realized by the Maine Office of the Attorney General, the state Department of Health and Human Services will obtain about $750,000 in order to raise the observance of federal and state tobacco laws.
The actions taken by the anti-smoking organizations and by the Maine state, could help change this troubling situation.
